The Indian Golf Society UK kicked off its 2025 season in fine style with the much-anticipated Spring Event held at the beautiful Sand Moor Golf Club in Leeds. Blessed with perfect golfing weather, 35 enthusiastic golfers gathered for a memorable day of sport, camaraderie, and celebration.
Nestled in the heart of Yorkshire, Sand Moor Golf Club is one of the region’s most scenic and prestigious venues. Designed by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie — who also co-designed Augusta National — Sand Moor offers an engaging challenge for golfers of all abilities. Its rolling fairways, immaculate greens, and panoramic views over Eccup Reservoir provided a stunning backdrop for this year’s spring outing.
The event was graciously hosted by Will Carpenter, the club’s ex-captain, along with Marcus De Matas. The day began with a warm welcome and player briefing by Will and Sujay, setting the tone for a relaxed yet competitive round. The course was in excellent condition, and the pleasant spring sunshine made for ideal playing conditions.
After completing their rounds, members gathered in the clubhouse bar to enjoy a refreshing drink and share highlights from the day. The atmosphere was vibrant and full of friendly banter. This was followed by a delicious three-course meal, enjoyed by all in the elegant surroundings of the Sand Moor dining room.
Following dinner, Sujay and Naresh announced the day’s results across both divisions. Iqbal Shergill emerged as the 1st Division Winner, displaying impressive consistency throughout his round. Ravish Shetty claimed the 2nd Division Winner title with a strong performance and steady play. As has become something of a tradition, Babu once again demonstrated his prowess by winning both the Nearest to the Pin and Longest Drive competitions — much to the amusement and applause of his fellow members.
The evening concluded on a special note as Sujay announced his decision to step down as the Society’s Secretary after years of dedicated service. His leadership and commitment have been invaluable to the Society’s continued growth. Stepping into the role will be Babu, whose enthusiasm and experience promise to build on Sujay’s strong foundation.
Overall, the Spring Event at Sand Moor Golf Club was a resounding success — a day of sunshine, great golf, and wonderful company, perfectly embodying the spirit of the Indian Golf Society UK.
